True Love ~Jun'ai Monogatari~

So this is one of the old classics that I had an interest in. I had some free time do to life events so I decided to head into this for a bit. Then I found out neither of my computers could run the actual game. Makes sense, this is a 23 year old game after all. Then I remember the Asenheim Project. A group of people who ported a bunch of the old classics into javascript programs so you could play them on the net. So that’s the version I played and have saves for.

Story

You are a guy. You were kicked out of your home to attend “college”(localization attempt, multiple people call it a high school and the few times they call it college they still refer to high school tests and such.). You have three months before finals so live out the end of your school life. Basic dating sim plot.

Some points I guess I’ll make. The game has a main male rival called Toshio. Despite the game setting him up a an NTR asshole who goes through a women a night, he doesn’t do anything. He shows up, makes some comments that piss off the main guy and then leaves. He tries to come on to the main female but she doesn’t like him. He feels pointless. Honestly the main guy doesn’t feel much better. A lot of the girls stop showing up after you sleep with them until their endings so you don’t get the feeling you are much better then Toshio. It’s weird and doesn’t fit the game’s name.

The end of the game has a split between your childhood friend and the smart girl, for no reason. Instead of having an actual love triangle that kinda works, your childhood friend gets jealous of every girl but the idea that you might have slept with the smart girl just pisses her off and ends her stuff. But if you ignore smart girl she gets kidnapped and raped and obviously ends your path with her. It’s not handled well. Art girl would have made a much better option, considering she’s the only girl with any positive interactions with the childhood friend anyway.

Most characters don’t talk to each other. This is a standard of the genre, but worth noting. Few of the girls have anything to do with each other. The only girl who interacts with a majority of the cast is the childhood friend(who is always jealous) who you have to ignore to do the other girls content. Makes you feel like a jerk every time.

Gameplay

Dating sim with little unique about it. There’s some bonus stuff you get for spamming options that make your stats jump that make the game very easy to deal with. If the events weren’t kinda randomized it would be a very simple dating sim. You also lose a small amount in every stat every day so even when you max out you still have to work to stay that way.

This is probably the only dating sim I’ll play where you can get every girl in a single run. Despite the game’s name, you can have sex with each girl in a single run before finally settling down at the very end. I followed a walkthrough for that and beyond a couple reload spams for events the game was a pleasant time.

H and Other stuff

It’s good for an older h game. Has some very small animations and some fairly decent writing for the time. Most games nowadays would be better but I know some people prefer the old VN artsyle to the more anime one we get nowadays. All sex stuff is vanilla though there is an attempted rape at one point by one of the villains/male characters.

Verdict and Save

I know some people have very high opinions of this, and I can kinda see why. We don’t have many of the golden day dating sims in English, and this one doesn’t really have any major issues. The story is simple and the girls are very unique from each other. It was a pleasant read for the most part. Nothing amazing but good.

Save has 100% of the cg gallery and a save for easy access to any sex scene in the game. To use these saves go to the Asenheim site. There scroll down and click on Backup saves and on that screen choose to import whichever save you want. Now when you play True Love on that site you will have the content from that save available.

Save for True Love

    • I think part of my problem is using the all the girls at once run. Another walkthrough I looked at mentions you get more overall events if you pursue individual girls which would probably at least give them the screen time needed to be likeable and not make it feel like you sleep with them then move on like a jerk.

      • Makes sense. I didn’t even know you could get all the girls in one run. I always went for one at a time, which made the “True Love” aspect more believable, since you have to kind of avoid the other girls to end up with the one you love. I liked the build-up with Arisa, especially.

I do agree that the game mechanics are kinda boring (study-study-study or sport-sport-sport…). Still, it beats a lot of modern games, fom Patreon-ones to the more commercially acclaimed ones and you have to figure out what to do to get to the girl based on her personality. For some, it’s obvious, but for others, not so much. I actually think it’s quite a clever game mechanics.

BTW, if the girl was raped, I think you got the wrong path; I believe you rescue her before anything bad happens. Also, there’s a gay ending, although there’s no CG for that.
